Saudi Arabia Records Hottest Day of the Year as Al-Ahsa Hits 50°C

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia experienced its hottest day of the year as temperatures reached 50°C in Al-Ahsa, prompting residents across the Eastern Province to take extra precautions against the extreme summer heat.

The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) confirmed that Al-Ahsa recorded the highest temperature of 2026 so far, surpassing the previous seasonal high of 49.3°C registered on May 29.

According to the NCM, extreme temperatures ranging between 49°C and 50°C were expected across several parts of the Eastern Province, including Dammam, Dhahran, Alkhobar, Jubail, Qatif, Ras Tanura, Hafr Al-Batin, Al-Khafji, Al-Nairyah, Qaryat Al-Ulya, Buqayq, and surrounding areas.

The weather authority also warned that strong winds could stir up dust, reducing visibility on highways and in open areas throughout the afternoon.

Earlier forecasts issued by the NCM indicated that temperatures across Saudi Arabia would remain above seasonal averages during June, July, and August, while rainfall is expected to stay near or below normal levels in many regions, including the Eastern Province.

Residents said the intense heat has changed their daily routines. Many now avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, schedule appointments earlier in the day, and rely on shaded parking areas whenever possible.

People also reported taking extra precautions such as drinking more water, using sunscreen, wearing hats and sunglasses, and limiting time spent under direct sunlight.

With outdoor temperatures remaining exceptionally high, many residents have shifted social and recreational activities to indoor venues, including shopping malls, sports facilities, cafés, cinemas, and entertainment centers. Evening walks have also become a preferred option once temperatures begin to drop.
