RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has ranked first globally in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) ICT Development Index (IDI), one of the key achievements highlighted in the fifth edition of the 2026 Sustainability Report for the Communications, Space and Technology Sector.

The report was issued by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) in partnership with the ITU and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology under the theme “A Sustainable Present for an Empowered Future.”

The report highlighted several major developments in Saudi Arabia’s communications and technology sector, including Riyadh’s hosting of the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-25) under the theme “Regulation for Sustainable Digital Development.” The event also resulted in the issuance of the Riyadh Outcomes for Innovative Regulation.

Among the other achievements highlighted was the launch of a global guide for developing policies and regulations related to electronic waste. The initiative aims to improve e-waste management and support the development of a circular economy. Saudi Arabia also joined the board of the Digital Regulation Network, strengthening its role in shaping digital standards that contribute to sustainable development.

In the space sector, the Kingdom launched an Earth observation platform and the “Shams” satellite, which is designed to monitor space weather and contribute to efforts supporting space sustainability.

The report also highlighted sustainability initiatives led by the CST and its partners across areas including the digital circular economy, space sustainability, regulatory capacity building, and international cooperation.

It features 14 national success stories involving more than 25 public- and private-sector entities. These initiatives demonstrate how advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, space technologies, and satellite-based Earth observation, are being used to address environmental and development challenges while creating sustainable benefits for society and the economy.

The report also outlines future priorities aimed at developing a more sustainable digital and space ecosystem and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
