Saudi Arabia Launches First National Database for Food and Nutrition Data

RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has launched the Kingdom’s first Food Composition Database, providing reliable nutritional information on locally produced foods and traditional dishes commonly consumed across Saudi Arabia.

Developed by the National Nutrition Committee under the Health Sector Transformation Program, the database uses approved scientific methodologies and quality standards to establish a reliable national source of food composition information.

The database provides comprehensive nutritional data covering energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, serving as a national reference for the health, nutrition and research sectors.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen national food data systems, support evidence-based decision-making and improve nutritional health and quality of life. It is expected to contribute to the development of food and nutrition policies, support scientific research and health studies, and increase public awareness of healthy nutrition.

The database will also support the food manufacturing industry by helping companies develop local products and improve their nutritional value based on reliable nutritional information.

By making food and nutrition data more readily available, the initiative is expected to support digital transformation in the health and food sectors. It will also enable developers to create digital applications and tools for assessing dietary patterns and nutritional status, strengthening the connection between data, technology and public health.
