RIYADH — The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing has called on owners and operators of shared residential facilities across Saudi Arabia to fully comply with updated health and technical safety standards, emphasizing the need to provide safe living environments and maintain emergency preparedness.

The ministry said all evacuation routes and emergency exits must remain unobstructed at all times. These exits should be equipped with illuminated directional signs and backup lighting systems that automatically operate during power outages. Emergency doors must also allow residents to open them easily from the inside during an evacuation.

Authorities stressed the importance of regularly inspecting and maintaining fire detection and firefighting systems to ensure they remain fully operational. The ministry also prohibited the storage of materials in corridors, exits, or other common areas and urged facility owners to follow approved occupancy limits to reduce safety risks.

Employers and accommodation operators were instructed to prepare approved evacuation plans that meet regulatory requirements. The ministry said evacuation maps, emergency exits, and designated assembly points should be clearly displayed throughout residential facilities so residents can respond quickly during emergencies.

The ministry also highlighted the importance of regular evacuation drills and practical training for residents. It encouraged operators to ensure occupants understand emergency procedures and know how to safely use basic firefighting equipment when necessary.

Officials noted that complying with safety regulations is not only a legal requirement but also an essential responsibility to protect residents and prevent accidents. They added that proper planning and a quick response during the first moments of an emergency can significantly reduce risks and help create a safer, more sustainable shared living environment.
